And then, there's the colorfully painted studio itself, along with its very tall, narrow doorway. Atop this narrow door is a portal, reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz - yet another clue that reminds visitors they've entered the enchanting world of Herb Witenstein. Herb studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1983 through 1987, taking very traditional studio classes and becoming increasingly serious about his art. His work was shown and sold in galleries in Atlantic City, though he preferred to stay in his studio to concentrate on commission work. When his son gave him some paints for his birthday about five years ago, Herb began to use color for the first time in his work. His initial dabbling with paint led to his going wild playing with color on flat surfaces. He painted large relief pieces which today hang in his home and then continued on to paint doors, trim, and railings with splashes of bright colors. |
